Elbaum's World 88: I Quit My Job ✌️

I Quit My Job ✌️

Yep, you read that right.

Some of you have asked me when this was coming, so you're probably not surprised. Others of you may be. To be honest, I'm just glad that anyone takes the time to read these emails.

I've always treated this newsletter as a kind of public diary. And if you have been following along with my thoughts over the past (almost) two years, it probably wouldn't shock you to know that I've gone through a long period of questioning the standard approaches to work and what role I want work to play in my life.

Along with my questioning, I've known for ~4 years that I want to be self-employed. I've very much enjoyed my current job, and for a while I wasn't quite sure when I would feel ready to make the leap. But several things (life stage, pandemic, new thinking, etc.) have combined in such a way that I'm convinced now is the right time to try – I gave notice a couple weeks ago and my last day is February 11. I also have a blog post and video coming out next week that will explain some of these things in greater detail, if you're interested.

So, what does this news mean for the newsletter?

My tentative plan is to write on the first Sunday of each month, and to give updates on how self-employment is going rather than writing about whatever I happen to be thinking. Frankly, I'm running out of ideas and I think my project updates will make for more compelling reading anyway.

Feel free to hit reply if you have any questions – I love hearing from you. And as always, thank you for following along with my journey.

Pete's Picks

  1. What I'm Reading: Ready Player One and Rage
  2. What I'm Watching: The last season of Ozark dropped, and I've been crushing it. High recommend.
  3. What I'm Listening To: I discovered Cal Newport's podcast Deep Questions a few weeks ago and have been enjoying it.

Drinking the AI Kool-Aid 🥤 I'll admit it: I'm fully on the AI bandwagon. To explain why, I think it's helpful to contrast with the crypto hype train. For me, it comes down to application. The blockchain is an interesting idea, but at the end of the day it still hasn't answered the question "How will this change my life in a tangible, everyday way?" On the other hand, for the current large language models (like GPT-4, etc.), the use cases are plentiful: Virtual assistant? Check. Personal...

The Weight of Self-Expectation 🏋️♀️ I've been thinking lately about how burdensome it can feel to not do the things that I say I want to do. Some of us want to lose weight. Others imagine learning a new language. For me, there are a few things I said I wanted to accomplish while self-employed that haven't happened yet. And it's been over a year. For a long time, my version of "losing weight" has been building a SaaS (software as a service, i.e. web app that you pay for), and over the past few...

The Law of Your Very Self 📖 I mentioned a few newsletters ago that I've been reading The Second Mountain by David Brooks. I'm a slow reader, so I'm still going through it. This week, a chapter on the idea of vocation stood out to me. In particular, there was a thought-provoking subsection under the heading "The Law of Your Very Self." In it, Brooks mentions an idea that I've been trying to spend a bit of time thinking about. Essentially, the concept is to take stock of your passions going...
